Today’s post describes my experience at a Tony Robbins conference, Unleash the Power Within (UPW Dallas 2023). I go through my realtime reflections and realizations and bring you along for the ride!
Introduction
For those of you not familiar with my story, hello! I’m Dr. Daniel Shin, a board-certified surgeon, real estate investor, and educator. My journey is one from financial scarcity to a future rich in possibilities and independence. With over $300,000 in debt from 15 years of rigorous education and training, I transformed my life’s trajectory, moving from burnout to a path of financial freedom. Now, with a diverse investment portfolio, my family and I are on an accelerated track to financial independence within the next 5-10 years.
I’m here to share this incredible journey with you, so together we can get to financial freedom together. Today, I want to bring you along with me on a recent trip to Dallas, where I attended a Tony Robbins conference called “Unleash the Power Within” or UPW. Below, you can follow along with my day to day reflections and mindset realizations, including my experience with the infamous Firewalk!
Day 1: The Marathon Begins
Imagine embarking on a 12 hour marathon, not of jogging, surgery, or medical lectures, but of a mind-expanding, life-altering experience. This is day one of UPW.
It’s really difficult for me to summarize this conference, but if I were backed into a corner, I would say this: UPW with Tony Robbins is a marathon conference where you get to examine your beliefs about your life and yourself, and then change these to better suit your goals. It’s an event that’s mainly targeted at entrepreneurs, but I would venture to say that it would be beneficial to everyone.
So it’s not just a seminar; it’s a battleground where fears are confronted and limitations are shattered. Walking over hot coals? Yes, you get a chance to do that too!
Walking on hot coals is crazy, right?
The culmination of day one at UPW is a barefoot walk across hot coals. It’s a standard part of the conference that symbolizes breaking through fears and emerging stronger.
As a physician, I’ve always understood the importance of a strong mindset. However, UPW has taken this understanding to a whole new level. It wasn’t just about setting goals but visualizing them with such clarity and passion that they become an undeniable reality.
When it comes to the Firewalk, it’s the same thing. You visualize walking across the hot coals and emerging unsinged and victorious, and that’s exactly what happens.
It’s the perfect cap to an amazing first day where you form the basis of starting to understand your beliefs, motivations, and fear.

Day 2: Digging Deeper into Decision-Making
With minimal sleep, day two was a whirlwind of insights into the psychology of decision-making. How do we make choices? What drives us? These questions are crucial not just in the operating room but in the investment world and your personal life.
With the post Firewalk buzz in the air, day two was all about consistently challenging yourself, stepping out of comfort zones, and the realization that what we once thought was impossible might just be a few brave steps away.
Embracing Change and New Challenges
This day also focused on embracing change. Change, whether in a surgical technique or an investment strategy, requires adaptability and resilience. It’s about evolving with the times and staying ahead in the game. I was able to reflect on my journey, from being handcuffed to a job due to debt to now steering towards financial independence.
Day 3: Transformation Day
The third day of UPW is called “transformation day” for a reason. It’s a day of profound reflection and strategy. You get to consider important questions like: “How have I grown in the last year?” and “Where am I heading?”
On day three, I took the realizations I had in day one and explored these questions against the backdrop of my recent life changes – relocating cities, diversifying my career, and expanding my investment portfolio.
I confirmed my life goal: living a life of continual growth in a way that contributes positively to my family, friends, and society as a whole. Going forward, it’s all going to be about Growth and Contribution.
Conclusion: My Takeaways from UPW 2023
While I didn’t get to attend much of the last day day of the conference, I felt that I still experienced the most important aspects of the conference. For me, UPW 2023 reinforced the idea that our beliefs can either be the wings that help us soar or the chains that hold us back. The challenge in life is to cultivate beliefs that empower us and discard those that limit us.
Final Thoughts: Inviting You to the Journey
While I found UPW 2023 transformative, I don’t think that you necessarily have to go to a Tony Robbins conference to start living a life of intentional growth and contribution. You can glean many of the same realization from books, podcasts, and videos.
As a surgeon, investor, and educator, I invite you to join me on this exhilarating path towards financial freedom and personal growth. Together, let’s break barriers, challenge norms, and walk through our metaphorical hot coals. It’s not just about achieving financial independence; it’s about crafting a life filled with purpose, passion, and endless possibilities.
Are you ready to step into this world of endless growth and opportunity? Let’s make it happen!
