The Prudent Plastic Surgeon
This is a great article from Dr. Frey that discusses the downside of a popular real estate tax strategy called accelerated depreciation.
I write about this concept and strategy here: Amazing Tax Deductions from your Short Term Rental.
I also discuss how it actually affected my 2022 taxes in this post: Cancelling Out My 2022 Federal Taxes as a Physician Real Estate Investor.
Dr. Frey does a great job of explaining in detail the actual way depreciation affects your basis in a real estate property and what happens if you go to sell a property that has been depreciated. Spoiler alert – you can be on the hook for a lot of money!
This one is a must read if you are planning to use the advanced tax strategy of depreciation!

The Darwinian Doctor
This blog post is all about residency training. I recount my own experience as a resident in urologic surgery at the county hospital in Los Angeles. I also discuss three specific factors that made my experience almost like a waking nightmare (at times): power imbalance, incompetent leadership, and an artificial zero sum game.
I offer some suggestions about how we can make sure that new residents can avoid the nightmare. I put a lot of burden for this on the leadership in training programs and advocate for a top down approach.
(I’m not calling out my residency program. It’s been almost a decade since I went through it, and I hear that things have changed for the better.)
