by The Darwinian Doctor

In today’s PPhREI Network Roundup post, Dr. Frey shows us how he approaches good debt vs bad debt, and I bring you along with my family on an epic California getaway.

The Prudent Plastic Surgeon

In this post, Dr. Frey talks about his practice of using good debt to pay off bad debt. This obviously sounds like a winning strategy, but how does he define good debt? What about bad debt?

I’d venture to say that he defines it differently than most. I think most people would argue that good debt is low interest debt that is being used to produce an expected return on an investment. For example: student loans for medical school or a mortgage for your primary home. This definition is dicey right now, because it’s almost impossible to find low interest debt anymore since the Federal Reserve started its war on inflation. Also, high vs. low interest rates are all relative.

Good debt is contrasted to bad debt, which is debt that is both expensive and has no expectation of generating a return. For example: credit card debt due to a vacation to Mexico or a high interest car loan to buy a lifted Ford F-150.

Regardless of your definitions, I approve of any thoughtful consideration of the value of debt, so I read this post with interest.

Memphis has been amazing in terms of my career and my wife’s career. But whenever we are back in Los Angeles, the difference in the weather and climate is just striking. #losangeles #weather #life #investing
