The Prudent Plastic Surgeon

In this great post, Jordan Frey breaks down the recent 2024 Doximity Physician Compensation Report. Here are some of the highlights from his summary:

  • Overall compensation grew by 6%
  • Some of the highest compensation areas were concentrated in the Southwest states
  • But the highest ratio of compensation to cost of living exists in the Midwest
  • Surgical subspecialists still make the most money
  • Pediatric subspecialists still make the least money
  • Most doctors are not happy with their compensation

What do these trends mean? Nothing good, in my opinion. Combine this dissatisfaction with the phenomenon of golden handcuffs, burnout, and the physician shortage and you’ve got a big problem.

The Darwinian Doctor

In this post, I take a magnifying lens to my 2022 federal tax return and show you how my real estate investing affected my tax liability. In 2022, I was knee deep in an experiment in short term rentals, with one of the main goals being a reduction in my tax exposure.

Well, this is the proof of concept post that shows you how I legally cancelled out approximately $200,000 of federal tax liability. It leaned heavily on the short term rental loophole and cost segregation techniques.
