In this post, Ian Cook reviews two popular resources for automating the management of short term rentals: Your Porter (now Guesty) and OwnerRez. He compares the various features of the platforms. My general take away was that Your Porter/Guesty is simpler to manage and easier to set up. OwnerRez offers more features and is more powerful, at the expense of ease of setup.
This is especially relevant as my wife and I head to Oklahoma next week to close on another vacation home.

The Darwinian Doctor
In this episode of Building the Empire, my family heads again to Palm Springs, where we’ve been renovating a vacation home. Since our home is currently uninhabitable, we’ve been finding Airbnbs of our own whenever we visit. In the post, I tell you about an interesting experience we had where a windstorm trapped us in the Airbnb for half a day.

The Prudent Plastic Surgeon
In this post, Jordan Frey explores the an oft-cited criticism of the FIRE movement — that it’s going to discourage people from working. He applies this argument to physicians and overlays it onto the backdrop of rampant physician burnout (moral injury) and a physician shortage.
He concludes that financial independence will set physicians free. Not to retire, as many fear, but to practice medicine in a way that is better for patients and physicians alike. I completely agree with this.
Only when we free physicians from their golden handcuffs and paycheck dependence will they have the ability to change medicine for the better.
