This past week, I laboriously read through IRS publications and dorky posts about taxes to bring you an analysis of how to avoid something called the “depreciation recapture tax.” Depreciation is the magic deduction that makes real estate investing so tax efficient, but it also is carefully tracked by the IRS. When you sell your property, they’ll try to claw back 25% of all the years of depreciation in a depreciation recapture tax. In this post, I go over 3 methods of avoiding this tax.
