In this PPhREI Network roundup post, we discuss short term rental management tools, whether you should buy or rent your first home, and I write a letter to my sons about their awesome mom.

Carpe Diem MD

Self managing your short term rental can be great due to increased profit and tax benefits. However, keeping everything organized and automated can be quite a chore. That’s where “channel managers” come in. They are apps or websites that neatly organize your short term rental listing and all the services that makes self-management tolerable. For example: automated pricing tools, smart lock managers, and bookkeeping.

In this post, Ian reviews again the two most popular options: Guesty for Hosts and OwnerRez. I am currently using OwnerRez, and I’ll probably always use it. It’s really complicated to set up, but it has a number of features that make it a really powerful management tool.

The Darwinian Doctor

This week, I got inspired to write another entry in the “Letters to my Sons” series. These are letters that I hope my sons will read in about 10 years, when they are nearing adulthood. In them, I hope to impart wisdom and explain why we made certain life decisions. In this letter, I write about our decision to leave California for another state and why their mom is such a badass.

The Prudent Plastic Surgeon

In this post, Jordan Frey discusses a common debate: should you rent or buy your first home? He gives a lot of reasons why it makes sense for most people to rent a home straight out of residency, then talks about how he decided to buy a home anyway! I tend to agree with him here that it makes sense to rent, at least initially. But like Jordan, I also ended up buying a house early on — actually in the beginning of residency! That’s a story for another day.
