Carpe Diem MD

In this throwback post, Ian raises a common question in the field of personal finance: Is your house a liability or an asset? This is a complex question since it depends on your definition of these terms.

Ian aptly points out that it’s both! It’s an asset that appreciates over time and provides a place to live. But if you have a mortgage on the property, it takes money out of your pocket every month like a liability.

I agree there’s not a straightforward answer. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and I do believe you can use your house as an asset accelerator via a couple of different methods. I’ll likely address this topic formally in a post soon.
