Is Geographic Arbitrage Worth It? | PPhREI Network Roundup | 6-23-2023

by The Darwinian Doctor

In this PPhREI Network roundup, we get another example of the power of geographic arbitrage, take a bike ride on the Green Line, and learn about the STR snowball.

In this post, Ian Cook talks about the concept of a short term rental snowball. It’s similar to the debt snowball, where you pay off increasing amounts of debt by starting with a small debt. Then you work your way up, and eventually your momentum takes you to new heights of financial freedom.

This is the same thing, except it’s about the accumulation of increasing numbers of cash flowing short term rentals. I think the theory is attractive, but will it play out in real life? I suppose it depends on the execution!

In this video post, I bring you along on a special bike ride along the Memphis Green Line. Over the past few months of a more flexible schedule, I taught my five year old son how to ride a bike. This is something that didn’t seem possible when my older son was ready to learn how to ride a bike. At that time, I was employed full time in SoCal and didn’t feel like I had the time.

So for a few reasons I highlight below, this was a special event for me.

I’ve written about geographic arbitrage before in reference to my family’s move from Los Angeles to Memphis. In it, I concluded that it was going to make a big difference in our ability to save money. I don’t think it’s actually played out that way, but that’s fodder for a different post.

In this post below, Jordan Frey writes about his experience with geographic arbitrage when he moved from NYC to Buffalo, NY. He specifically notes the major differences in costs for things like childcare and housing between the two cities.
